12-Month Creative Writing & Handwriting Journal Bundle

Give your child or students an entire year of meaningful writing practice with the Pencils and Poppies 12-Month Creative Writing & Handwriting Journal Bundle!

This complete bundle includes all 12 monthly journals, January through December, combining creative writing, handwriting practice, emotional awareness, and drawing into one simple routine children can use all year long.

Rather than practicing handwriting in isolation, children get to use their handwriting for a real purpose: expressing their own thoughts, ideas, opinions, memories, and imagination.

Each month includes a generous collection of seasonal and everyday writing prompts, and I have intentionally included more prompts than there are days in the month. You are not expected to complete every page. Parents and teachers can simply choose the topics that are most interesting, age-appropriate, or relevant to what their child or class is learning at the time.

Two Handwriting Line Styles Included

Every monthly journal is provided in both a 3-lined and 2-lined format.

The 3-lined version provides additional visual guidance for children who are still working on consistent letter size, placement, and alignment.

The 2-lined version is a great next step for children who are becoming more independent with their handwriting but still benefit from structured writing lines.

You can choose one style for the entire year, switch between them as needed, or gradually transition from the 3-lined pages to the 2-lined pages as your child's handwriting skills improve.

The handwriting throughout the journals uses the same print style featured in my other Pencils and Poppies print resources, providing important visual consistency for children who are already familiar with my handwriting products.

A Simple Daily Writing Routine

Each journal page begins with a predictable routine that helps children build independence.

Students practice:

Writing their name neatly
Recording the date
Identifying the day of the week
Checking in with how they feel that day
Tracing the beginning of the writing prompt
Completing the response independently
Drawing a picture to go along with their writing

This combination allows children to practice multiple skills within one activity without making the page feel overwhelming.

Creative Writing With Just the Right Amount of Support

Young writers often have plenty of ideas but struggle with one question:

How do I start?

Each page provides a guided sentence starter that the child traces before completing the rest of the thought independently.

Tracing gives children extra handwriting practice while also removing some of the pressure of starting with a blank page. Once they have begun, they can focus on developing and expressing their own ideas.

Throughout the year, children will encounter a wide variety of prompts, including seasonal topics, imaginative scenarios, personal reflections, school experiences, family, friendship, opinions, memories, holidays, goals, kindness, and everyday life.

This variety keeps daily writing fresh and helps children practice writing for many different purposes.

Built-In Emotional Awareness

One of my favorite features of these journals is the daily "I feel..." check-in.

Before beginning their writing, children take a moment to recognize and identify how they are feeling.

That small step matters.

Learning to notice and name emotions helps children develop self-awareness and emotional vocabulary. Over time, it can also help children become more comfortable recognizing that different feelings are a normal part of everyday life.

Many of the writing prompts throughout the series also encourage children to reflect on their experiences, relationships, accomplishments, challenges, kindness, frustrations, hopes, and feelings.

The result is a writing journal that develops more than handwriting—it gives children a regular opportunity to reflect and express themselves.

Writing + Drawing

Each journal entry also includes space for students to draw a picture that corresponds with what they wrote.

For young children, drawing and writing often work together. A child may be able to visualize an experience or story before they can fully explain it in words.

Illustrating their response gives them another way to communicate their ideas while making their finished journals more personal and memorable.

Easy Organization for Parents and Teachers

Every month includes two prompt-tracking options so you can use whichever system works best for you.

One version allows you to check off completed prompts and cross out the topics you do not plan to use.

The alternate version includes a space beside each topic where you can write the date the prompt was assigned or completed.

Because there are more prompts than days in the month, these organizational pages make it easy to select the activities you want and keep track of what has already been completed.

There is no required order. Work straight through the journal, choose topics based on your lessons or calendar, or let your child select the prompt that interests them that day.

Blank Writing Pages Included

Each monthly journal also includes a blank journal page.

Use it to:

Create your own writing prompt
Coordinate writing with another subject
Respond to a special event or field trip
Write about something happening in your child's life
Encourage completely independent free writing

This makes the journals flexible enough to fit a wide range of homeschool and classroom routines.

Multiple Covers to Choose From

Each month comes with a variety of journal cover designs, allowing children to choose their favorite.

Blank cover options are also included for children who would rather design their own.

They can add their name, illustrations, colors, or other creative details to make each monthly journal feel uniquely theirs.

Designed With Handwriting in Mind

Before creating Pencils and Poppies, I worked professionally as a graphic designer and Creative Director for The Walt Disney Company and later as a high school teacher in an International Baccalaureate college-preparatory school.

When I began creating handwriting resources for my own child, I brought together my experience in design, education, and parenting to create materials that are carefully structured for young writers.

I pay close attention to letterforms, spacing, writing-line proportions, readability, and visual consistency so children aren't simply being asked to write more—they are being given an appropriate environment in which to practice.

The Creative Writing Journal Series was designed as a natural next step for children who are ready to take the handwriting skills they have learned and begin using them to communicate their own ideas.
